Meet Brittany, a staff member at the YMCA of Central New York who works as the Membership Administrator at our North Area Family branch. We asked Brittany about what brought her to the Y, and how working here as an employee has impacted her life.
"It all started a few years ago when I was looking for a new job that would fit with my family's best interests. I had always been passionate about helping others, and I knew the YMCA had a long-standing reputation for supporting families, children, and individuals of all abilities. When I found a position open at the YMCA, I felt a pull to apply. Not only would it allow me to work in an environment where I could give back, but it would also provide me with a chance to be part of something that felt meaningful.
I was fortunate enough to get the job, and I quickly became part of the YMCA family. Working here has been incredibly fulfilling, but what makes it even more special is how the YMCA’s values of inclusion and support align perfectly with my own. As I settled into my role, I couldn’t help but notice the variety of programs offered, especially the swim lessons for kids. I had always wanted my children to learn how to swim, and I saw that the YMCA had tailored swim programs, including those for children with special needs.
My kids, who have special needs, had always been drawn to the water more than others. I knew how important it was for them to build proper skills in the water, but I was worried about finding the right environment for them. The YMCA turned out to be the perfect place. Instructor Mari was compassionate, trained, and truly committed to creating a supportive space for my children. It was incredible to watch my kids gradually gain confidence while enjoying the water.
Over time, my children’s progress was amazing. What began as a simple goal of teaching them how to swim turned into something much more significant. The YMCA became a place where my family could grow and thrive with a community that truly understood and supported our unique journey. I’m so grateful that my children have a safe and supportive space to grow and learn, no matter their challenges."
