February is American Heart Month and the YMCA of Greater Syracuse is here to help you take action to improve your heart health through a Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program that helps adults with hypertension lower and manage their blood pressure. The program focuses on regular monitoring of one’s blood pressure at home using proper measuring techniques, individualized support and nutrition education in an effort to reduce blood pressure and improve their quality of life.
1 in 3 American Adults have high blood pressure. Only about half of people with high blood pressure have their condition under control. Research shows that the simple process of checking and recording your blood pressure at least twice a month over a four-month period, along with regular physical activity, proper nutrition and reducing sodium intake, may lower blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.
“Taking control over knowing your blood pressure numbers can be an easy step in preventing heart disease,” said Jessica DesRosiers, Senior Healthy Living Director at the YMCA of Greater Syracuse. “Our evidence-based program can help, whether you already have high blood pressure or think you may be at risk.”
Participants will work with trained Healthy Heart Ambassadors for the duration of the four-month program. During this time, participants will be encouraged to:
- Self-measure their blood pressure at least two times per month
- Attend two personalized consultations per month
- Attend monthly nutrition education seminars
Participants will record their blood pressure readings using an easy-to-use, self-selected tracking tool. The Y will provide options for participants who need a home blood pressure monitor.
