Water Temperature Issues in East Lap Pool

Update January 16:

Our lap pool heater was repaired yesterday! It will take time to get the pool back up to temperature, but we should be able to resume normal operation soon. It is open for use. Thank you for your patience!

Update January 14:

Our Lap Pool at the Hal Welsh East Area Family branch has reopened for use, but please be aware that the water temperature will be colder than normal as we continue to wait on delivery of the part needed for repair. Please use caution for extended use.

Cold water removes heat from the body 25 times faster than cold air. Should you feel an abnormal increase in heart rate, be unable to catch your breath or have uncontrollable shivering, please alert a Lifeguard and exit the water.

Do NOT go from Lap Pool to Hot Tub/SteamRoom/Sauna or vice versa. Extreme changes in temperature can also cause health risks. Thank you for your understanding as we work to bring our pool back to normal operation!

Update: January 11

Dear East members- Although we are still waiting for delivery of the part needed to complete the repair for our Lap Pool at our East branch, we have confirmed with the Onondaga County Health Department that there are no health restrictions for cold temperature closings. We are working on creating guidelines and recommendations to allow members to swim next week if they choose to, with the knowledge that the pool will be much colder than usual.

So, please stay tuned for more information on this as we confirm a schedule with our lifeguards and ensure that we can help members stay safe, while also providing access to this pool once again!

We continue to appreciate your patience as we work through the frustrating situation!

=========================

Our Lap Pool at the East branch will remain closed this week. We are waiting for the part needed to complete the repair – unfortunately, the shipping will not be as quick as Amazon as the part must come directly from the manufacturer in Canada, and we cannot expedite. We will update you next week with any information we have on a timeline for repair.

We are reaching out directly to folks who may have impacts to their lessons and classes to give more detailed information on plans.

We truly understand your frustration and disappointment with this news as we begin a new year – we feel the same!

The Therapy and Activity pools at East will remain open and we invite you to take advantage of your YMCA of Central New York Association membership to visit lap pools at Downtown, North, and Northwest in the meantime. Thank you again for your patience and understanding!

Update: 1:30pm, 1/2/2024

We have diagnosed the issue with the water temperature in the East Lap Pool. Unfortunately, we will need to close it at 2pm today, 1/2, due to the unsafe temperatures. It will remain closed tomorrow, 1/3, as we wait for delivery of the necessary replacement parts.

We will provide an update tomorrow as to our expected timeline for reopening the Lap Pool. The Therapy and Activity pools at East will remain open and we invite you to visit lap pools at Downtown, North, and Northwest in the meantime. Thank you again for your understanding!

We want to let you know that we will be opening at our normal time in the morning on Tuesday, January 2nd, but we are experiencing issues with our Lap Pool boiler. The water temperatures will be lower than normal. A repair team will be coming to investigate the issue first thing in the morning and we will provide updates if we need to adjust availability during the day. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to correct this issue!
